A Special Relationship

In the spirit of Thanksgiving - there is this lovely double statue of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, called "Allies", sitting together on a bench on Old Bond Street. Made by British-American sculptor Lawrence Holfcener, it was commissioned by the Bond Street Retailers Association and presented to the City of Westminster and the people of London in 1995 to celebrate 50 years of peace.

Churchill said: "Meeting Roosevelt was like opening your first champagne. Knowing him was like drinking it." This sculpture captures the intimacy of the friendship between these World War II friends and allies, and invites passers-by to share in that intimacy by sitting between them.
